Poem for a Daughter

photo © Mark Butkus 2017
Doin' da Dino in da desert.

I can't beat up every boy
who dares to break your heart
and I can't fight your battles either
But I can be in your corner
when you come out swinging
and I can be the arms that hug you
to let the pain drift away

I can't be the father you wanted
or the one that you missed
I'll never pretend to be your friend
But you'll always have my ear
and I can be the arms that hug you
to let the pain drift away

I can't be there in person
That's just the way life is
Whatever happened, happened
and tomorrow's a day away
I see in you a warrior
but should you stumble, should you fall
I can be the arms that hug you
to let the pain drift away
