My Birthday with Russell Rosander

The poet Russell Rosander and his friend Romeo.

I was born this morning
About one-thirty A.M.
It was cloudy, though I didn't know it
And it smelled like rain.
I had to pee,
So I got up and did it.

A birthday.
A marker of time.
We try to measure our lives with them
As we do with accumulated possessions, experiences
And lists of accomplishments.
Like measuring the ocean
By determining how much water
A teaspoon will hold.

I determine today
To make my bed,
Fix breakfast and eat it,
Maybe go to town
And Beer Bobs book exchange.
To sit at Hector´s Corner Bar
And enjoy the company of friends
And the clean, fresh air
After the rain.

— Russell Rosander

On the occasion of his birthday, the Bar None Group celebrates the life and poetry of Russell with his own poem of his birthday  — written on his birthday five years ago. Happy birthday Russell!
