Knee High to A Grasshopper

It wasn't me who left your mother
With you knee-high to a grasshopper
Fresh out of diapers
There was no more us
No more you, me, mom and the family unit

The writing on the wall of teenage lust
Became a sign over the door that read, EXIT
We grew and married as teenagers
We grew some more as parents and new adults
Our paths diverged with you in a crib

I renounce the sun, the sea and, all that sings:
Take back your enchantment, your sirens, your illusions
I will no longer wreck my boat upon your island
Beachless, surrounded by jagged rocks and false promise.

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

El Gallo

El que le cantó a San Pedro no le volverá a cantar.

A smile on a birthday
Made from small hands
This is what he likes
This is what I'll make
She had led herself to believe

He had returned from the south
Another escape into himself
Where they roam the streets as equals
Neither creature paying heed
