Existential One-Liners

photo © Mark Butkus 2008
Anxiety is the dizziness of freedom.

I never encounter anything except my own responsibility
When you have chosen not to make a choice you have made your choice
Choose — You are free
Freedom is nothing more than a choice that creates opportunities
Man is condemned to be free

If God didn’t exist everything would be possible, said Dostoevsky
Even if God exists it wouldn’t change anything
Limit yourself to what you can see

Existence precedes essence
I think, therefore I exist
Truth is not encountered by chance
It is impossible for man to transcend subjectivity

What counts is total involvement
There is no reality except in action
Existentialism is a doctrine of action

Man is responsible not just for himself but for all men
Man’s destiny is within himself
Man is always the same, situations vary
We are alone with no excuses

There are no accidents in life
Everything which happens to me is mine
A man lives and leaves an impression — outside of that there is nothing

I really shouldn’t drink absinthe while reading Sartre
