A Vestige of the Moon as a White Spot

photo © Mark Butkus 2009

The earth smells exclusive tonight,
wind fills the trees and lanes,
a train passes further on — lightweight.
If only I could talk about the voices I hear,
they’re an invisible stream of your breath,
where the past is lost at my fingertips.

Baraka Bashad

Iconic scene from Selma-to-Montgomery Civil Rights March recreated at Lowndes Interpretive Center in Alabama.

I only knew I was from the darkness
once you introduced me to the light,
that light you hold within
that shines brighter than
anything I could ever fathom,
even with the foresight of
my third eye's sight.

Paul Laurence Dunbar's Invitation to Love

photo © Mark Butkus 2011
A poem of love for Valentine's Day.

Come when the nights are bright with stars
Or come when the moon is mellow;
Come when the sun has golden bars
Drops on the hay-field yellow.
Come in the twilight soft and gray,
Come in the night or come in the day,
Come, O love, whene’er you may,
And you are welcome, welcome.

Rate This Poem

photo © Mark Butkus 2011

Rate this poem on a scale of Mussolini to Trotsky
Rate this poem on a scale of cloud to trouser
Rate this poem on a scale you imagined loudly
in the moment you got up to use the toilet
before you realized you were lucid dreaming
and not really in your childhood apartment.

Into the maelstrom,
Into that chaos, that unknown,
That duality, that reality,
All of that love and suffering,
Joy and sorrow
That comprises terrestrial existence.

photo © Mark Butkus 2012

Super Bowl L is upon us. While Vegas odds makers have the Carolina Panthers as 5 1/2 point favorites to win the game itself, the Bar None Group looked into which team had the better fight song. If we were taking odds on the fight songs the point spread would change considerably.

Let's first look at the Carolina Panthers fight song.

Charles Bane Jr.'s The Chapbook — Why?

Because the heart is a climbing hill
and you are near its’ rise.

Because you are near when far,
and I feel ever close;

Late night at the Sand Bar in Barra de Navidad, Jalisco, Mexico.

My friends,
On more than one occasion.

My budget,
I only came in for one beer.
