A Poem for Esmé

Turn the page to September
A new month, a new chapter
For some a new year

Tell me dear Esmé
What plans do you have
For the day of your birth?

Tell me dear daughter
What dreams do you have
for your twentieth year?

Will you return to school
With a plan or a notion?
Will the wind push you forward
Or blow in your face?

Will you wake up alone
With unrealized goals?
Will the ring that you snatch
Be stolen or brass?

Will there be a day
In your twentieth year
When the stars align
And our paths will cross?

Will we share a laugh
Either here or there?
Will you call me daddy
From a phone anywhere?

Tell me dear Esmé
What plans do you have
For the day of your birth?

Tell me dear daughter
What dreams do you have
For your twentieth year?
