A Road North

The sun is shining
for the first time
since last year
and it's the tenth day
of this year.

No windshield wipers keeping time
as they did across Mexico.
No fierce seas to keep me
away from the Gulf of Mexico.

The gendarmes at the border
are now forgotten
as family welcomes us
home to San Antonio.

But home is elusive
and tomorrow New Orleans calls.
One last weekend
before one deep breath
and the final hours north
to Chicago.
