First Lines Second Thoughts — A Farewell to Arms

First Lines Second Thoughts is a look at the first lines of well known literary works. On second thought, do these opening words stand alone as poetry? Today we look at A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway.  Published in 1929.

In the late summer of that year
we lived in a house in a village
that looked across the river
and the plain to the mountains.

— Ernest Hemingway

Set in Italy during the first World War, Ernest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms takes its title from a 16th century poem by George Peele.
